I think Skype is one of the world’s best inventions. Why you ask? Well, tonight, I just “attended” my nephew’s second birthday party from thousands of miles away. It was amazing really. It was like I was really there. The only difference was I couldn’t actually hug anyone, I couldn’t move myself, and I couldn’t eat the cake, but other than that, it was perfect. I got to see him blow out his candles and mutilate his cake. I got to see him open all his presents, and then play with them. I got to see all my family and friends, people I love dearly and miss. I got to talk to them and joke around like I would if I was there. I got to see my niece try to crawl around and get all of her brother’s new toys. It was almost as good as being there. Sometimes I try to imagine what it would have been like to be a missionary about 80 years ago. Back when missionaries left, never knowing if they’d ever see their family again, because it was too expensive to return home. When the only way they had to communicate was through letters. It must have been hard. I’m so grateful I live in the age of technology! I can call my mom almost everyday thanks to a phone that works through the internet. I can watch my niece and nephew grow up, and they can know who their aunt is, thanks to Skype. I can keep in touch with my friends and church family through facebook and email. It’s amazing really. I can feel connected to home without being there, and that makes living half way around the world much easier.
Now if someone could work on inventing a teleporter…
